December 19, 2004What Does It All Mean?Ok smart guys...and gals....let's see how you do with this one. What do the following expressions have in common with your ole buddy Mr. Helpful? (this contest is off limits to the pride and joy who already knows so keep yer lips zipped dude or I am gonna know one cowboy whose Christmas will suddenly become quite presentless...) 5k/sec 80k/sec 280k/sec The winner gets an autographed copy of my book if and when I ever finish the goddamn thing. UPDATE: Well...no one got it although Gina got pretty close and My Buddy Jim got pretty gross. Here's the answer: 5k/sec was the average download speed I had way back a zillion years ago when I had a dial up account. 80k/sec was the average download speed I had with my recently discontinued DSL account. 280k/sec is my download speed now on cable internet access. Last night I downloaded a nearly 6 meg song from Napster in just over 20 seconds. All I can say is WOW! This sucker really flies. I got a great deal with Comcast and when they say 3meg speeds, they werent a kidding. Ive run several speed tests and Ive average 2.6 megs which, with the broadband overhead, puts me almost right there with what the little buggers over at Comcast advertised. One of the reasons I hadnt made the switch is I never believed I'd get that kind of speed but, baby, I'm a believer now. Of course, as my node fills up, there may be some speed variations but, for now, I'm Shatner riding the rocket to places unknown at the speed of light.... Well, you'll finish the GD thing, or so I am very much hoping.... As for my guess, how quickly you can load a page on the web? (It should be noted...I don't know much about such things and I just pulled that outta my a$$) For what it's worth anyway.
