Late Night Musings

It's amazing what runs through your mind at three thirty in the morning. Especially when the only thing worth watching on the telly is reruns of Springer (topic, for those who care, "sex star wannabees", woohoo nothing but ugly sluts parade across the screen, yay for them, eh?)

I just happened to hear "Jack And Diane" by John Mellencamp a little while ago. The only thing I could think about as the song played was an interview with Mellencamp that I read some time ago about that very song. John was talking about how popular the song was and he mentioned that for years after the song came out, he'd have people come up to him at concerts and ask about whatever happened to Jack and Diane, anyways?

Think about that for a moment. Mellencamp has a fairly big hit with a lightweight song that sports a decent melody and kinda clever lyrics (although, nowadays, the ole bit about "life goes on, even after the thrill of livin is gone" is kind of tired) and people come up to him for years afterwards and ask about the characters in the song as if they'd been the subjects of a thousand page novel or something.

In other words, folks, I listened to the lyrics very carefully earlier tonight and, frankly, they're now officially stupid lyrics. They dont tell much of a story at all; definitely not enough that people would even have a reason to pretend there's substance enough there to warrant an update...yet they do.

Christ, people can be stupid.

With the video, I imagine people wanted them to be real and wanted them to go on. That album was 1982. Cable was just getting started where I grew up and MTV was da bomb. Perhaps, the images from the video speak beyond the lyrics to the song. A picture speaks a thousand words and all that...
